Edinburgh to John O’ Groats

Members may like to hear of the special ride Ted and I undertook in August. Taking our bikes on the train, we set off pedalling from Edinburgh around the east coast of Scotland, arriving at John O’ Groats to mark the 10 year anniversary of our completing LEJOG! We visited so many interesting places along the way and crossed many bridges great and small.

On arrival at Buckie, a small town near Banff, we left our bikes at the B&B for a rest and set off walking The Speyside Way, a 65 mile long distance footpath. We did this over 5 days ending at Aviemore where we also had time to visit the summit of Cairngorm Mountain by the funicular railway, even seeing reindeer on the way up!

On we pedalled to John O’Groats from Buckie and then sailed over to the Orkneys where we boarded our overnight crossing to Lerwick on the Shetland Isles. We spent 4 days touring with our goal being Unst, the most northerly island. The sight of all the birds on the cliffs at Hermaness and the Muckle Flugga lighthouse at the top of Unst was amazing and for a few moments we were indeed the most northerly people on the British Isles!

Our total mileage was 630 miles over the time we were away.
